My work is an outpouring of my thoughts and feelings on to
canvas in the form of doodles, which were originally inspired by
the work of the late Willem de Kooning, but now they've taken on
a life of their own.

praesentia Caryl Beach, Sally Tyrie and Veronica
Grassi
In celebration of the rich heritage and landscape of Hertford,
praesentia are exhibiting new work in response to this theme to
include drawing, painting, print-making, photography and
sculpture. Fine artist and photographer, Caryl Beach is
particularly interested in the landscape and often overlooked
evidence of human occupation. For experimental printmaker and
fine artist Sally Tyrie, the fine line and traces of nature's
presence inspire her unique mark-making. Veronica Grassi will
explore the delicate balance in the local environment using the
mediator of stitch, soluble film and iron wire.

Chinese Whispers - Jenny Alderson, Judith Coxell, Marian Hall, Sue Hickman, Debbie Lewis Brindley and Jan Simpson
Drawing on the children’s game of Chinese Whispers, this exhibition shows what happened when six artists each created a textile ‘whisper’, passing it to the next member of the group to use as inspiration for another textile, which the recipient, in turn passed to the next member. Six beginnings, a journey through thirty six textiles, six surprising endings.

use mixed media for my wandering rooms. Using a combination of
printed matter, paint and ink I can suggest a dream like room
which may lead to another space beyond it.”

Strangely Familiar - Jane Davalle & Glynnis Bainbridge
To make the familiar strange is to distort,
invert or transpose the everyday ways of looking and
responding which render the world a secure and familiar
place. We have made a conscious attempt to achieve a new
look at the same old world, people, ideas, feelings and
objects. “Making the familiar strange” - we saw this
quotation when visiting the Gauguin Exhibition at the Tate
Modern and were thus inspired!

Pomeroy is in residence during August. She will be using

Charles and John Rawnsley
A
collection of Digital images of the UK and Europe. After
the invention of the photographic process in the early
part of the 19th century nothing much happened until the
20thcentury when John Rawnsley got serious with a camera.
Charles Rawnsley (son of John) became equally serious at
16.35 on September 16th 2006. Both have mastered the art
of making the obvious, magnificent, the unexceptional,
delightful and the bland, sumptuous.

The Shape of Memory- Heather Jukes
This Exhibition explores the subject of human memories using body shaped fragments and fragments of text.
Heather Jukes is a Fine Art practitioner with a background in genetics. She has always been interested in alternative ways of exploring the body’s identity – as shadows, as DNA sequences, and, in her most recent work as shaped fragments which follow the body’s contours. These forms are reminiscent of the shed skin a snake leaves behind or the empty chrysalis after an insect pupates. They carry a memory of the shape of what was before.
There are references in Heather
Jukes’ work to the paper garments created by Susan Cutts (we
shape the clothes we wear, making them as individual as a
thumbprint); and the ideas explored by Olivier Goulet in his
Skinbag series, where skin is reclassified as a fabric for
making. She has also been influenced by the work of
displaced Cuban artist Ana Mendieta, whose Siluetas were
hollowed out of the earth to leave memories of her body in
the landscape.

The Shape of Memory is a University of Westminster MA degree exhibition.
Anatomy in Art- Christopher Benton
Chris Benton is a
neuro-radiographer at UCLH and has also been painting for
many years. In this show he uses scans and x-rays to provide
inspiration and subject matter for his artwork.
