LIZ BLACK

Courtyard Arts Gallery

29 July – 29 August, 2025

Once again will be turning our gallery space into a temporary studio for an emerging artist. This year we welcome contemporary artist, Liz Black to the centre.

Liz’s work is characterised by colour, spatial depth and technical precision and draws inspiration from the everyday, using three-dimensional sculptural forms to investigate two-dimensional compositions that address the elements of spatiality, line, form and colour.

Liz then translates these into captivating and joyful pieces that challenge and engage the viewer. This distinctive style combines traditional drawing with the precision of digital graphics.

Liz’s interests stem from modernist theories, optical art, and abstraction, and her art delves into these esoteric visual concepts. As a modernist, Liz’s work consistently revolves around materiality, form, line and colour, regardless of the diverse sources of her inspiration.

The simplicity of these relationships generates artwork that deeply resonate with her, evoking a sense of tranquility and profound contentment. The work aims to subtly challenge viewers’ perceptions of dimensionality and raise questions on the composition.

The conceptual ideas underlying the pieces invite engaging and thought-provoking discussions about the contemporary world.

Over the residency period, Liz will be developing the ideas behind the concept of ‘Digital Discard’.

Embracing other materials and sculptural compositions. Also to experiment with a variety of interpretations, including digital, drawing and painting. That will provide a range of 3d and 2d interpretations.

Liz will be inviting visitor to the centre to engage with her practice and participate in creating mini-sculptures from discarded packaging, which you can then draw and that then will become part of her final exhibition. Please check social media for times and dates.
