NINE LIVES IN COLOUR
STABLES GALLERY
We are delighted to be exhibiting Andrew’s work in The Stables Gallery this Spring. Read below to find out what his exhibition is inspired by.
The work in Nine Lives in Colour began during lockdown, when I started painting what was immediately around me…buildings, windows, and fragments of sky. They reflect a need for structure, stillness and control in what was quite a turbulent time for me (a new relationship, a new home, the pandemic, and the death of my mum).
By 2022, the paintings shifted and cats began to appear. Although these are loosely based on my own cat (Mogwenna), they aren’t pet portraits, but stand-ins for myself. Using cats allowed me to explore mood and emotion with a bit of distance. The figures often sit, watch, or wait…reflecting moments of pause, uncertainty, or quiet observation.
Colour plays a big role throughout my work. I use bold, unrealistic colours to set the emotional tone rather than describe real places. The graphic lines and flat spaces link back to my earlier architectural paintings, while the cats bring a more personal and playful element. I work mainly with acrylic gouache and paint pen on art board, though I also sometimes paint digitally using the Brushes app on my iPhone.
Nine Lives in Colour is about moving through different versions of yourself over time…changing, adapting, and finding new ways to exist…endurance through change.
Finally, this exhibition is dedicated to my mum, whose birthday would have been the 17th of February, the day this exhibition begins, who loved cats, and who always encouraged my art, reminding me to “not hide my light under a bushel.”
