TEXT & TEXTILE!
CONNIE FLYNN
Ten years ago, Connie had an exhibition titled, Apron Strings at Courtyard Arts. She returns to show a new body of work titled TEXT & TEXTILE! which is inspired by familiar phrases we use every day but do not always know where they actually originate from. After much research, she found out that many of these phrases are related to the Textile industry and Textile Mills. Connie has used repurposed domestic cloth and traditional white cotton garments to hand stitch the chosen phrases with contrasting red thread. Connie has recently completed an artist residency exploring the traditional process of letterpress, she has combined her letterpress outcomes to represent a sense of time, history and heritage.
Connie’s multi skilled practice has evolved through experimenting and combining traditional techniques and modern practices, using a variety of materials to work with both hand and machines skills. She has and continues to develop her practice, 2025 marks thirty three years of exhibiting throughout the UK and abroad
‘It is important to me to create textile objects by using materials sourced with thought, whether it is recycled cloth and thread or natural fibres from sustainable sources. There is often a ‘food for thought’ narrative in my work representing and making connections between time and place, materials and people. ‘
Connie has a formal teacher training a B.A. (Hons) in Art and Education and is a qualified Art Therapist. She has an extensive experience of residencies in museums, schools and community contexts, with much experience of working with others to develop skills and confidence in making art. In 2015 Connie completed a B.A. (Hons) Contemporary Textile degree in Shetland as a way of learning new skills to combine with other techniques. She finished her third year with a distinction. Connie continues to exhibit her work, as well as offer talks and workshops.
