Requirements

Students are asked to bring their own materials.

Starting out with Acrylics? If you’re buying art materials for the first time, here are our recommendations to get you the best value for your first set of acrylic painting materials. Got a bigger budget? We suggest you look at Daler Rowney, Winsor & Newton or Sennelier.

Acrylic Paints – See www.theworks.co.uk  for the best value Crawford and Black paints. Sold individually or in sets, we suggest you don’t buy smaller tubes than 100ml. The ones in the image above are 200ml. The Works is also great for art canvases or art boards too.

Acrylic Surfaces to paint on – The size should be A4 or larger:  art canvas, artboard, acrylic paper (can be stretched in advance on a board if you want to keep it very flat), mixed media thick paper or even cartridge paper (should be stretched for flatness). If you’re interested in stretching your own paper please use the below link. Additional items you’ll need are gummed tape and a board to stretch your paper on:  https://youtu.be/e47qJq5o42E

Acrylic Brushes – We suggest you buy a set that includes about 5 brushes ranging from a very fine detail brush up to a 1 inch flat brush.

Mixing palette or plate – Should be white but can be anything, paper plates are a bit too absorbent.

Additionally – You may want to buy a tube of superior quality white paint as you will use a lot more of this than other colours:  Daler Rowney, Winsor & Newton or Sennelier are good makes.

It’s also helpful to have the following on hand: Kitchen roll, Water pots, Waterproof desk cover. Ensure you wear old clothes as once acrylic paint dries it is very hard to get it out of fabric.
